heaven & earth

In Vietnamese cosmology, the concept of Heaven is represented by a circle, and the Earth by a square. If you take into account that the words for "round" (tròn) and "square" (vuông) both carry connotations of completeness, this suggests that Heaven and Earth are just as they ought to be, each one a full and complete work in its own right. With this as a jumping-off point, the Heaven and Earth series begins by examining the intersections of cylindrical objects with rectangular planes, and then branches into more conceptual explorations of completion, deficiency, and the nebulous idea of "enough." What are the "enoughs" on which we hang our hopes of happiness, success, belonging? What happens when we fall short?
